Guiding principles

The Swiss Neurological Society is the professional association for neurology specialists. Its aims are as follows:

  • Promoting neurological sciences and neurological teaching in education, further training and advanced training
  • Maintaining close relationships between the neurological sciences and related disciplines
  • Organising scientific meetings
  • Maintaining relationships between the society’s members and international societies, institutes and academics

Mission

The Swiss Neurological Society (SNS) is the professional association for neurology specialists. It is committed to providing high-quality care to patients with neurological diseases in Switzerland. To this end, it defines specialist training, promotes expertise and advanced training and supports teaching and neurology research.

We treat patients with respect and compassion. Their interests are our top priority.

As a professional association, the SNS represents the interests of neurologists working in Switzerland and gets involved in health policy discussions. The SNS maintains relationships with the societies of related disciplines and is a member of national and international societies.

Vision

It is an important priority of the SNS to incorporate the known methods and findings so it can create the conditions needed to provide patients with comprehensive care at all stages of their neurological diseases of the central nervous system, the peripheral nervous system and the muscle system.

Given that the diseases are so complex and that highly specialised technologies are used for diagnosis and treatment purposes, neurology needs to have an increasingly interdisciplinary focus in medical practice, further training and science.

At the same time, the SNS focuses on promoting junior doctors in the long term with a view to meeting demographic trends, all the while also ascribing greater importance to neurology in an ageing society. With these priorities in mind, the SNS initiates forward-looking projects and communication with related professional societies and institutions.

Overcoming the Pay Gap in Neurology

Female self-employed medical doctors earn 25 % less than their male colleagues in Switzerland.

According to recent statistics from the Federal Office of Health, after adjusting for part-time work, this difference was on average 38% for Neurologists.

This gap in income for Swiss female Neurologists is highly problematic, and reflects inequalities between women and men.

WIN (Women in Neurology) has called for actions towards identifying the underlying reasons and create equal, fair pay for neurologists, independent of sex and gender.

The SNS strongly supports equal opportunities for all Neurologists, as well as activities to overcome the Pay Gap in Neurology.
