Specialist examination

You must pass the specialist examination to obtain the specialist neurology qualification. The examination is conducted by the Swiss Neurological Society’s Examination Board.

It consists of three parts, with examinations taking place in two sessions:

  1. Written part (session 1) MC questions
  2. Structured oral part (session 2 (A))
  3. Practical part (session 2 (B))

Part 1

Written examination – multiple choice examination in English

Location: Inselspital Bern, Ettore Rossi Auditorium, Julie-von-Jenner House (JJH)
Time and date: Friday, 29 August 2023 (2 pm to 6 pm) Check-in possible from 1 pm

Part 2

Oral/practical examination

Location: University Hospitals of Geneva
Date: Friday, 07 November 2025 (individual times)


Criteria

Admission requirements

Since January 1, 2010, only doctors who hold a federal medical diploma or a foreign medical diploma recognized by MEBEKO are eligible to take the specialist examination (Art. 23 para. 4 of the Further Training Regulation). The transitional provisions are set out in Art. 69 para. 3 of the Further Training Regulation.

It is recommended to take the specialist examination after completing the mandatory training or during the last year of it. The written part can be taken earlier, but it should be noted that the structured oral and practical part must be completed within 3 years after the written exam (Specialist Training Program Neurology 4.5.1).

Examination fees

For the written and oral/practical examinations

  • Members of SAYN (Swiss Association of Young Neurologists) since May 2022 or earlier: CHF 1,500.00
  • Members of SAYN from June 2022 or later: CHF 2,250.00
  • Non-members: CHF 2,250.00

Written exam only or oral/practical exam only

  • Members of SAYN since May 2022 or earlier: CHF 800.00
  • Members of SAYN from June 2022 or later: CHF 1,125.00
  • Non-members: CHF 1,125.00

SAYN = Swiss Association of Young Neurologists
An invoice for the payment of examination fees will be sent by the end of June 2025 at the latest.
